Network cabinets

Characteristic

Network cabinets are there to ensure the organisation and security of network hardware such as switches, routers, patch panels and other components. While at the same time enabling structured cabling and effective cooling, it offers protection against physical influences such as dust and access by unauthorised persons.

Network cabinets

From data centre to (in-house) IT room

High-quality network cabinets such as the IS-1 network rack from SCHÄFER IT-Systems are required for the operation of every data centre. But even small variants for operating a single network cabinet in the in-house IT room pose no problem.

Nevertheless, important IT hardware should never be operated without professional network cabinets. The risks involved in operating network hardware without network cabinets are far-reaching. In the worst case, they can cause damage and result in high financial costs.

Typical risks when operating network hardware without network cabinets
Unauthorised access

Network devices can be more easily accessible to unauthorised persons if they are not protected by specially designed network cabinets. The consequences of such access may include sabotage, data theft or unauthorised changes.

Damage to hardware

The hardware is more susceptible to environmental stresses such as dust or moisture, which can shorten the service life of the devices. You can therefore have network cabinets equipped with optional security systems. If, for example, the worst-case scenario is a fire, network cabinets from SCHÄFER IT-Systems can be equipped with an extinguishing system that recognises smoke at an early stage and immediately initiates extinguishing measures in an emergency.

Thermal problems

Overheating of the devices may lead to performance problems or even failures due to a lack of systematic cooling.

Poorly utilised premises

Network cabinets offer the possibility of setting up IT hardware in a small space. Doing without them often means the opposite.

Disorganised cabling

If there is no network cabinet, cables can quickly become tangled. This makes maintenance more difficult and increases the risk of connection errors.

Expert tip

In network cabinets, IT technology can be easily combined with an uninterruptible power supply (UPS). Power cuts from the utility grid can never be ruled out, even if they are only brief. However, the consequences can be very serious.

It is not only the network that breaks down and has to be restarted as soon as the power is restored. In extreme cases, data may be lost. You should therefore always consider protecting your IT network from such situations with a UPS.

Maintenance and servicing

When it comes to hardware maintenance and servicing, network cabinets can be a great help.

In the event of problems or failures, the affected module is immediately located and can be processed.

The more IT hardware is operated in the network, the more important the use of network cabinets becomes.

Serverrack

Is a server cabinet the better choice after all?

Server and network cabinets are more different from each other than you might initially think. It depends on the hardware that is to be installed in it in order to achieve more efficient performance.

Network cabinets are, as the name suggests, more suitable for network components. These include, for example:

  • (Network) switches
  • Router
  • Patch panels

A server cabinet tends to provide the basis for server hardware whose components are used for data processing. They are therefore larger and generate more heat. Server cabinets are therefore primarily designed for cooling, which is not always absolutely necessary for network hardware.

Which size is right for you?

The first question is what size your network cabinet should be. What height, width and depth is suitable?

Available space and number of IT components

One of the main criteria for choosing the dimensions is, of course, the number and size of the IT components that you want to accommodate in your network cabinet.

The space available to you on-site also plays a role. The choice of size is therefore always a compromise between the available space and the number of IT components to be integrated into the network cabinet.

Depth of the cabinet

IT technicians always favour the cabinet that offers them the most space. The wider and deeper a network cabinet is, the better it can be used for cable management.

The depth also influences the size of the IT components that can be accommodated in the network cabinet. With a deeper cabinet, the air routing for ventilating the IT hardware can also be much better implemented. The higher the network cabinet, the more devices you can accommodate in it.

Width of the cabinet

As far as the width (or the inner hole angle) is concerned, the choice is often a 19-inch (48.26 cm) network cabinet. This has become established as a standard based on which the size of the hardware components is also designed. Network cabinets with a different width are only used in very rare exceptional cases.

They are required for very specialised hardware, which is also very rarely used, as the 19-inch standard has become established worldwide. 19-inch network cabinets are now standardised in accordance with IEC 60297 and DIN 41494.

Much more important is the depth and height of the network cabinets. The deeper a 19-inch cabinet is, the more technical accessories and cabling can be accommodated in it without disrupting the function of the hardware. SCHÄFER IT-Systems offers network cabinets with the following depths:

  • 600 mm
  • 800 mm
  • 900 mm
  • 1000 mm
  • 1200 mm

Depending on the equipment you choose, your desired network cabinet should have a certain depth. Our service team will be happy to advise you on the right size for your needs.

NT-Boxen

Choose the right height for network cabinets

Much more important, however, are the height units (HU) of 44.45 mm each. They not only indicate how high your network cabinets will be, but also how much IT technology they can accommodate. Depending on your requirements, the height should be selected precisely so as not to leave any resources unused.

The IS-1 network cabinet from SCHÄFER IT-Systems is available ventilated and non-ventilated in 25, 38, 43 and 47 HUs. We would like to use a few examples to give you a rough overview of which amount could be the right one for your requirements.

25 HUs

Ideal for smaller and larger companies whose network sizes are constantly growing.

38 HUs

For small and medium-sized server rooms.

43 HUs

Industry standard for larger networks and data centres.

47 HUs

Where particularly high demands are placed on computing power, e.g: Research and education, telecommunications, media and entertainment industry, colocations of several companies.

If you are not exactly sure about the size of your network cabinets, it is better to choose a larger version. So there is definitely enough space to allow the network hardware to work smoothly.

The overall efficiency of your computer hardware can also be customised and improved with a range of add-ons. SCHÄFER IT-Systems offers you a large collection of extensions with which you can customise your network cabinet. The use of monitoring is also no problem if there is a good technical basis.

Our experts are also on hand to help you decide which size and which equipment you need for your requirements. Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any further questions.

Yes. The vertical profiles of the cabinet are screwed to the welded roof/floor frames. All panelling parts and the interior fittings can be removed.

Can the racks be supplied as a flat pack?

No. The IS-1 server cabinets are delivered fully assembled and standing on a pallet.

Can racks be fitted with a lock?

All racks are already fitted with a lock as standard. If required, this can be replaced by a standard 30/10 profile half cylinder in accordance with DIN 18252/EN1303. iQdata Segment Security electronic locking systems can also be used.

How quickly are IS-1 racks delivered?

The delivery time depends on the type of rack and the quantity. You will be informed of an exact delivery date with your order confirmation.

What protection classes are available?

All IS-1 models are available in protection classes IP20 or optionally IP54.

What does IP20 and IP54 mean?

IP20 and IP54 are protection classes that indicate the suitability for various environmental conditions and the protection of people from danger during use. The first digit indicates the degree of protection against foreign bodies/contacts. The second digit indicates the degree of water protection. There are protection classes from IP00 to IP69K.

IP20 means that the rack is protected against solid foreign bodies larger than 12 mm (e.g. fingers). There is no protection against the ingress of water. A rack with protection class IP54 is protected against the ingress of dust and splash water from all directions.

Where are IS-1 server racks used?

The IS-1 server rack is specially designed for use in data centres with high heat loads and conditioned air (cooled, no dust in the air). It has perforated doors on both sides for horizontal ventilation. It offers perforated or closed doors depending on the type of cooling architecture selected.
