Server cabinets

Store hardware securely

Regardless of whether it is a small or large data centre, the server hardware must be housed securely. With numerous complex computing tasks, it may be the case that the IT technology produces excessive heat under heavy load.  Professionally equipped server cabinets such as the iQData IS-1 server rack from SCHÄFER IT-Systems specialise in providing IT hardware with the optimum conditions for its work.

Those who choose not to use professional server cabinets are usually confronted with the following risks:
Overheating

The hardware may overheat. The consequences are performance losses or even complete hardware failures in this context. Server cabinets require a suitable cooling infrastructure.

Dust and dirt

Dust, dirt and other impurities can easily get into the hardware and impair its performance. Here too, failures can be one of the more serious consequences.

Physical security

If the lockable server cabinet is missing, the hardware is more susceptible to theft, vandalism or accidental damage.

Cable management

Cable management quickly becomes chaotic if there are no server cabinets. Troubleshooting and maintenance become considerably more difficult and time-consuming.

Unplanned downtime

The aforementioned risks increase the likelihood of unplanned downtime in unprotected environments. This may affect business continuity and therefore be very damaging to the company.

Insufficient scalability

It is more difficult to expand or adapt the IT infrastructure as required if there is no centralised management system such as a server cabinet.

Expert tip

In server cabinets, IT technology can easily be combined with an uninterruptible power supply (UPS). Power cuts from the utility grid can never be ruled out, even if they are only brief. However, the consequences can be very serious.

It is not just the computer infrastructure that breaks down and has to be booted up as soon as the power is restored. In extreme cases, data may be lost. You should therefore always consider protecting your IT servers from such situations with a UPS.

Maintenance and servicing

Server cabinets can be a great help when it comes to hardware maintenance and servicing.

In the event of problems or failures, the affected module is immediately located and can be processed.

The more IT hardware is operated in the network, the more important the use of server cabinets becomes.

Is a network cabinet the better choice after all?

It depends.

Server and network cabinets are more different from each other than you might initially think. It depends on the hardware that is to be installed in it in order to achieve more efficient performance. Server cabinets are, as the name suggests, more suitable for computer components. These include, for example:

  • Server
  • Powerful core switches
  • Storage solutions
Network cabinets vs. server cabinets
What are network cabinets used for?

Network cabinets are mainly used to organise network components within them. Switches, routers and patch panels, for example, are included. Components like these do not perform complex calculations like servers. Therefore, the hardware inside such cabinets does not get as warm as a running server. Cooling does not play such a prominent role in cabinets for the network.

What are server cabinets used for?

The situation is different for server cabinets. Cooling plays a central role here. Servers and similar hardware can reach high temperatures during use. If the cooling system of the server cabinets is not sufficiently expanded, this may lead to crashes or even failures.

Server cabinets are therefore much more complex in design than the cabinets that are designed for the expansion of a network. If you only want to set up one network, the network cabinet (19 inches) is the better option. However, if you want to carry out complex calculations, you need the server cabinet. Of course, network components can also be accommodated in the server cabinets alongside the servers.

Which size is right for you?

The first question is what size your server cabinet should be. What height, width and depth is suitable?

Available space and number of IT components

One of the main criteria for choosing the dimensions is, of course, the number and size of the IT components that you want to accommodate in your server cabinet.

The space available to you on-site also plays a role. The choice of size is therefore always a compromise between the available space and the number of IT components to be integrated into the server cabinet.

Depth of the cabinet

IT technicians always favour the cabinet that offers them the most space. The wider and deeper a server cabinet is, the better the cable management can be organised in it.

The depth also influences the size of the IT components that can be accommodated in the server cabinet. With a deeper cabinet, the air routing for ventilating the IT hardware can also be much better implemented. The higher the server cabinet, the more devices you can accommodate in it.

Width of the cabinet

As far as the width (or the inner hole angle) is concerned, the choice is often a 19-inch (48.26 cm) server cabinet. This has become established as a standard based on which the size of the hardware components is also designed.

Server cabinets with a different width are only used in very rare exceptional cases. They are required for very special hardware that is very rarely used, as the 19-inch standard has become established worldwide. The 19-inch rack and the 19-inch server cabinet are standardised in accordance with IEC 60297 and DIN 41494.

The depth and height of the server cabinets are much more important than the width. The deeper 19-inch cabinets have to be, the more technical add-ons and cabling can be accommodated without disrupting the function of the hardware. Typical server cabinets operate with a depth range between 900 mm and 1200 mm. In a few special projects, it may even be up to 1400 mm.

Depending on the equipment selected, your desired server cabinet should have a certain depth. Our service team will be happy to advise you on the right size for your needs.

NT-Boxen

Selecting the right height for server cabinets

Much more important, however, are the height units (HUs) of 44.45 mm each. They not only indicate how high your server cabinet and network cabinet will be with the 19-inch specification, but also how much IT technology can be accommodated in it. Depending on your requirements, the height should be selected precisely so as not to leave any resources unused.

The IS-1 server cabinet from SCHÄFER IT-Systems is available ventilated and non-ventilated in 25, 38, 43 and 47 HUs. We would like to use a few examples to give you a rough overview of which amount could be the right one for your requirements.

25 HUs

Ideal for smaller and larger companies whose network sizes are constantly growing.

38 HUs

For small and medium-sized server rooms.

43 HUs

Industry standard for larger networks and data centres.

47 HUs

Where particularly high demands are placed on computing power, e.g: Research and education, telecommunications, media and entertainment industry, colocations of several companies.

IP-54 Rack

IS-1 safety cabinets

If you are not exactly sure about the size of your server cabinets, it is better to choose a larger version. This means that there is definitely enough space to accommodate many servers in the rack and ensure smooth functionality of all active components.

Server cabinets such as the iQdata IS-1 server rack are supplied with protection class IP20. The IS-1 safety cabinets, which fulfil protection class IP54, are also available one level higher. Racks like these have been specially developed by SCHÄFER IT-Systems for use in industry or other demanding environments.

What does the IP marking mean for the protection class?

Yes. The vertical profiles of the cabinet are screwed to the welded roof/floor frames. All panelling parts and the interior fittings can be removed.

Can the racks be supplied as a flat pack?

No. The IS-1 server cabinets are delivered fully assembled and standing on a pallet.

Can racks be fitted with a lock?

All racks are already fitted with a lock as standard. If required, this can be replaced by a standard 30/10 profile half cylinder in accordance with DIN 18252/EN1303. iQdata Segment Security electronic locking systems can also be used.

How quickly are IS-1 racks delivered?

The delivery time depends on the type of rack and the quantity. You will be informed of an exact delivery date with your order confirmation.

IP20 means that the rack is protected against solid foreign bodies larger than 12 mm (e.g. fingers). There is no protection against the ingress of water. A rack with protection class IP54 is protected against the ingress of dust and splash water from all directions.

Where are IS-1 server racks used?

The IS-1 server rack is specially designed for use in data centres with high heat loads and conditioned air (cooled, no dust in the air). It has perforated doors on both sides for horizontal ventilation. It offers perforated or closed doors depending on the type of cooling architecture selected.
